Notes
The character sheet on Ascendant allows the player to keep secrets about their character hidden from other players. In order to do this, Ascendant uses two characters sheets, one fully public that all players can see and one secret that only staff and the person playing the character can see. They both use the same format and the secret sheet only needs the information the player wants to keep hidden from other players.
The public sheet should be posted in Pending Characters, and the secret sheet should be posted in Secret Sheets. Both should be titled with the name the character goes by.
Both sheets are necessary, as the public sheet is what other people will see to plot with you, and the secret sheet is where the character's stats need to go. The format for both is the same, however please don't just copy and paste the public sheet into the secret one if you have no secret information. The secret sheet is only for information you want to keep hidden.
It can be formatted however you want, so feel free to use any templates you like. We're just interested in the information. You can also use whatever format you want to convey the information (IE, traditional, interview, freestyle, etc), however some methods might make it harder to convey the information we need than others, so keep that in mind.
There are two custom fields in the mini-profile that need to be filled out before acceptance: Character Sheet and Played By. The character sheet is the link to your public profile, and Played By is your OOC name; just whatever you, the player, want to be called. You can find them in Profile -> Edit Profile -> Personal, at the bottom. Both must be filled out before your character is accepted. Staff will fill out Power Level and Zenith.
When you are done with your character post the links to both sheets in the Notification Thread and staff will review it as soon as they are able to. Make sure to link to both the public and secret sheet as staff will not review the character until both are linked.
When the character is approved, the public sheet will be moved to Accepted Characters and the secret sheet will not be moved in order to keep the information hidden.
If the character needs some edits, staff will post in the character's secret sheet with their concerns. Don't fret! No one's upset with you, the staff just want to know a few more things about the character and want to make sure it fits in with the setting and the intent behind the site. Just keep in mind that only the account that posted the character will be able to see the staff's comments. Once the edits have been made post in the Notification Thread again with both sheets.
If you have any questions please PM All Staff or ask on Discord. Don't reply to the pend post in the thread as staff do not look in those threads for questions and thus will not see it.
Public and Secret Sheet Requirements
These are the minimum things that must be put into each sheet. Meaning, that anything not on the list of things required for the public sheet can be put into the secret sheet and vice versa.
Public Sheet Requirements
- The character's name, or at least what they're called - if they go by an alias the alias can be on the public sheet with their real name on the secret sheet for example.
- Appearance - or at least what people see when they look at them. If they have hidden scars or are using their power to look different, for example, then those can go in the secret sheet. Appearance is still completely optional if you have a Face Claim and avatar.
- Personality - or at least what people will experience when they interact with them. If they, for example, act nice and sweet but are really petty and vindictive, then it's okay to only talk about the nice and sweet parts in the public sheet while keeping the rest in the private sheet.
- Your magic overview - the parts of your power that are obvious when used. Making this part public is important because it means you don't need to explain the basics of your power in every single thread.
Secret Sheet Requirements
- Your full magic description - including weaknesses and other limitations that shouldn't be public. This information will often make your power types and immunities very obvious, which is why it goes here.
- All stats must go on the secret sheet. That means Powers, Immunities, Traits, and Power Level. None of these things can go on the public sheet, and must be on the private one.
All the rest are still required fields unless otherwise specified, but they can go on either sheet depending on how much you want other players to know about your character. Keep in mind that keeping secrets can be a lot of fun, especially when you get to reveal them, if you hide too much it may be difficult to plot with your characters.
Public Sheet
Name: Whatever names or aliases the character goes by.
Age: How old the character is in years. Can also include their birthday if desired. Characters can be no younger than 13.
Gender: The character's gender.
Group: Which member group they belong to. See the Group thread for details.
Homeworld: The universe they're from. Use the name of the board.
Occupation: What the character does for work or some kind of income. If they're a teacher specify whether they're a teacher at The Academy and their position if they are one, or if they're a regular teacher at a mundane school. If they're unemployed just put unemployed.
Face Claim: Character's FC. Write it Series Name - Character Name for convenience. If you commissioned a piece link to the person's website or DA. If the artist doesn't have one talk to Kitten4u. Remove this section if your character does not have a FC.
Appearance: What the character looks like. You can use pictures, words, or a combination of both. If you just want to use your FC and you have an avatar then this section is optional. However, this section can also be used to describe things like height, weight, build, and any differences between the FC and the character. Remove this section if you don't want to use it.
Talents: Hobbies or things your character is good at. It's intended to give characters an obvious way to connect via hobbies or rivalries if they're both good at something, so it can be as long or as short as you like.
Personality: How the character acts. Include things like how they act alone, how they act around others, what they like, what they don't like, what makes them happy, what makes them upset or mad, what they want to accomplish, their ethics, what they do at the academy, how they treat fellow mages, and how they treat non-mages. Don't just list traits, give a comprehensive look at how the character acts and try to include some information that other players can act on or types of interactions that you think would be interesting.
History: What happened to the character in the past that made them what they are today. While a timeline of events is important, we're more interested in the character's emotional journey and the events that changed them as a person. It doesn't have to be long, but it should paint a good picture of how the character developed. What was their family like? Their childhood? How were they raised? How did they learn about their magic and how did they feel about getting it? What did they do with it? How did they join The Academy?
Magic Overview: The basic effects of your magic that can be discerned by interacting with your character. This should tell people whatever they need to know in order to respond when you use your power. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it needs to be completely accurate. For example, a mage who uses illusionary flames that don't actually cause real injuries might say here that she wields flames that deal damage which mysteriously heals itself after she leaves.
Tools: A list of weapons or other tools that the character keeps with them to use in battle. It might be swords, a gun, or even as something as simple as a lighter if their power can make use of the fire. Anything that they use to aid their fighting style or powers. Keep mundane things, like jewelry, in the appearance section unless they happen to use it in battle to make them fight more effectively. If they don't have any you can put none or just remove this section.
Secret Sheet
Remember that any of the fields from the public sheet can be put here instead, or they can be put on both sheets if you want to contrast the public image with the secret reality.
Magic Name: Whatever you want to put on the Power List. It won't be associated with your character so it should be completely accurate.
Magic Description: The full description of the character's magic. It should include how it functions, its strengths, and its weaknesses. We expect most powers to be extremely strong, so we're less concerned about the power being overpowered and more concerned about how fun it will be to play against. Make sure that there's ways for other players to play around it, and keep in mind that we do have a combat system. Your character needs to be able to fail when the system says they do.
Powers: The character's Powers and what level they are. See the Powers thread and the Battle Rules and Incursions thread for details. For each of them, give a brief description on how that power type applies to their magic.
Immunities: The character's Immunities and what level they are. See the Powers thread and the Battle Rules and Incursions thread for details. For each of them, give a brief description on how their magic makes them particularly effective against that power type.
Traits: A list of the character's traits. See the shop thread for details.
Power Level: The sum of the character's Powers, Immunities, and Traits. Most starting characters will be Power Level 15.
