Name: Hikaru Yamanoue
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Group: Hero
Homeworld: The Early Renaissance: 1448 CE
Occupation: Rice farmer, volunteer militia membeer
Face Claim: You're Under Arrest! - Miyuki Kobayakawa
Appearance: Standing at 5'7", Hikaru is fairly tall compared to most of the people in her village. The rest of her build is more slender and feminine, her body being mostly made up of soft curves. Her shoulders are a little on the broad side, but they're not any broader than her hips. Though, her hips are wide. The rest of her body is fairly narrow, though not disproportionately so. Her torso is long, making her legs a bit short, though not disproportionately so. Her skin is tanned from years of working outdoors.
Her face is soft and round, a 'goose-egg' face so to speak. Her chin is barely noticeable, practically melding with the rest of her face, and her nose is narrow and flat. Her eyes are on the larger side compared to most people in her village, but smaller than most European peoples'. Hikaru's eyes are a very dark brown, to the point that they almost look back. Her hair is black and goes just below her shoulder blades, and she normally keeps it in a tight, neat braid.
The clothing she favors is thick and warm, but easy to move around in. Most of the time its in dull colors, like brown and tan, with a simple accent color like blue or green. They don't tend to have any special patterns or anything that would make them more expensive. She's trying to save up for proper armor, but that's rather expensive and has been out of her means until she developed magic. Her shoes are practical and water proof to making working in rice fields easier She doesn't have many sets of clothing, so it's rare to see too much variety in her attire.
Talents:
Basic Combat: Hikaru's been training along side the other children in her village since she was very young. She was mostly trained on how to defend her home and family rather than expected to go into battle, so she's actually more experienced with a bow and arrow, but she's always been partial to the sword believing it might be her one shot to bring her family fame and wealth. She's practiced with it a lot on her own.
Odd Jobs: She grew up in a small village, and when someone needed help she always wanted to do what she could to help them. Thus, even though she mostly helps her family maintain a rice paddy, she's also capable of making pottery, building and repairing houses, doing laundry, cooking, and just about all the other menial tasks someone needs to do.
Sewing: Out of all of those tasks making and repairing clothes was her strong suit. She knew how to tailor clothing to the person's body to make them look nice, her stitches were nice and even, and she even knew how to spin cloth and thread as well as dye it. She's happy to make just about anyone's designs come to life.
History: While Hikaru isn't exactly educated, she is well aware of her family history even several generations back, as well as much of the history of her country.
People: She's good at remembering not only names and faces, but what a particular individual likes, dislikes, and even what their goals are if they've been shared with her. She doesn't even need to be told directly if she's annoying someone or if a different communication style would be better, she's good at reading situations and people and adjusting how she acts around them accordingly.
Personality: At first, Hikaru comes across as quiet, soft spoken, and even passive. She tends to keep her opinions to herself, rarely seems to directly object to anything, and always seems to be wearing a soft smile. It's true that she tends towards almost excessive politeness, but the rest is less about fear of confrontation or lack of confidence in her opinions and more that she simply doesn't see the value of words. They can be useful when it comes to consoling someone or for basic communication, but for actually convincing people, expressing ideas, or just about anything else she finds them woefully inadequate and prefers to let her actions speak for her. Therefore, despite having very strong opinions about many different topics, she rarely actually talks about them unless asked about it directly. Instead, she lives every single one of those ideas and never compromises on any of them.
She feels compelled to help people with their troubles. Sometimes this support is as small as a few kind words or emotional support, but, depending on the size and nature of the problem, she's willing to do quite a bit more to try to solve it. For example, one issue she cares deeply about is the amount of violence in the world right now. She wants to try to minimize the need for violence as much as possible and thus has decided she wants to try to unite the world so that there's less need for people to fight wars. The scale of her hopes and plans don't bother her much, nor does she go out of her way to make them happen quickly. She just keeps those ideas in the back of her mind so she can act on opportunities when she sees them. Hikaru makes a point to never be lazy and make use of every opportunity she comes across, even if it's small or inconvenient to do so. She's not afraid to dream big because she believes that doing what she can is enough. Even if she never fully succeeds at what she's trying to do, as long as there's improvement and peoples' lives are better, then that's enough.
Her compulsion to help people is strong enough that she'll act on it even against the other person's wishes, often without their knowledge. Words aren't particularly useful, action is all that matters, so mentioning her plans or intentions isn't all that necessary in her view, especially if she intends to work alone. And she works alone often, it's easier than trying to work together if she has the means to accomplish what she wants. She's not adverse to team work if she's on the same page as her allies, she just doesn't want to take the time to convince people that she's right. It's far easier to simply show them most of the time because of how much louder actions speak. Thus, it's not unusual for her to go behind her allies' backs if she thinks the results will be worth it.
Despite her tendency to never want to explain herself and tendency to work alone, she's actually a very patient person with both situations and people. In the rare instances she does explain something, she's more than willing to keep going until the person understands it. She doesn't get too annoyed when people make the same mistakes over and over again, and she's willing to do what she can to help them learn and improve from them. It doesn't matter to her how long a particular task takes, as long as there's a bit of incremental progress she'll still consider it worth while.
Hikaru is not very open minded. She thinks there's a certain order to the world, and therefore there is a correct way to do things and an incorrect way to do things. She steers people towards doing what she thinks is correct though the occasional soft words, but mostly by living the way she thinks is correct herself and hoping that people will see the results and want to achieve those results themselves. Sometimes how she thinks people should live and how she needs to live come into conflict though. For example, she doesn't think people should have to fight and that the world shouldn't be as violent as it is, but in order to end that violence she, and some others, still have to fight. In those instances, she'll try to steer them away from fighting and violence via either helping them with their other projects or saying a lot of positive things about their other hobbies and activities. In the end, Hikaru is very rigid and traditional, as well as stubborn to the point that it can be very difficult to change her mind on anything.
Right now, Hikaru doesn't have much interest in the academy or what it seems to stand for. She doesn't think mages should be special, they just have greater means to act on their ideas and thus have a greater responsibility to the world. About the only reason she sticks around is to keep an eye on her younger mage sister.
History: Hikaru was born in a small village in a mountainous area. It was small and remote enough that it didn't get much protection, but the land in the area was good enough that it was raided by thieves or people looking to expand their own empires regularly. Most of the time it was peaceful, which just made the attacks stand out all the more. Hikaru's family lived a short distance away from the main area of the village, near the top of one of the mountains, which just made the contrast stand out all the more to her. It was rare for anyone to attack that part, but she could still see all the fires and the results of the raid from the windows in her house. Once she was old enough to understand what was going on, she decided she didn't want to live in a world like this and that she couldn't allow it to continue. One night, while holding her baby sister, she decided that she was going to put an end to all this so that her younger sisters could live in a more peaceful world.
Once she was old enough, she started combat training so she could defend her home and family. Much like everything she did, she took to it well. Her ability to pick up new skills was strong, and being able to pick up another one so well confirmed to her that she could do just about anything. So, she practiced hard and took every opportunity she could to further improve her skills. Maintaining the rice fields was an opportunity to increase her physical strength. Transporting goods was for endurance. Making pottery for dexterity. While she put a lot of effort into everything she did, she was almost single mindedly trying to find some way to make her village a safe place.
As she got a little older, she heard more stories from the outside world. She always made a point of listening to her elders and learning everything she could about her village, she hadn't heard that much about the rest of the world. That was when she truly understood the power and responsibility of a warrior. Her village was a small, fairly unknown place. Her family, and most of the village really, was poor and most people wouldn't be particularly bothered if the entire village was wiped off the map. This bothered Hikaru, and she still wanted a better future for her siblings and her future children. The more she heard about warriors outside of the village the more she felt like that was her best method for improving her family's quality of life. Being a good fighter was a possible route to nobility and status, and while she didn't care about achieving it herself, being able to give that to the rest of her family was a proposition she didn't want to give up. It drove her to work harder.
Unfortunately, she was in a bit of an awkward position. Until now she was happy to listen to her father and the other leaders of the village. She was willing to accept that they knew best and that working with them would secure prosperity for everyone. However, he didn't like the idea of her leaving the village, or even putting as much effort as she was into learning how to fight. She simply needed to learn how to defend her family for when it was time for her to start a family of her own. There was no need for her to go into battle or seek any amount of glory and status. Everything was fine here. It was unlikely she'd accomplish a lot anyway as it seemed unlikely that anyone would take her as a warrior over any of the men. She accepted that she was likely going to have to pretend to be a man, but she was sure she could pull it off. It's not like she ever failed anything she tried. However, her family wanted her to stay here, and after hearing about some of her ideas her father was outright hesitant to even allow her to continue learning how to fight. It was the first time she even considered going against his wishes.
Ultimately she stayed in the village, but continued putting considerable effort to learning how to fight. As long as the raids on the village continued, she was going to want to put a stop to them. It didn't matter how long it took, she was going to put an end to this. In the mean time, she was content to sneak away from her safe house on the mountain top and head down to the village to help them fight off any invaders. It was rare for her to come home without any injuries, which earned her a stern lecture from her father. As much as she wanted to obey him, he was clearly flat out wrong here. If the people in the village were capable of fighting off the raiders then they wouldn't be a problem anymore. People like that wouldn't be attacking if there was nothing to gain. So she stopped listening to him about that one topic and started formulating her own plans in secret.
Hikaru made a point to remain the golden child. She did well with everything she tried, so there was little she couldn't do. She went out of her way to help people, so she was well-liked by the people of her village. She cared for her younger siblings often, so her parents could focus on other things. All she had to do was make sure that they never found out about what she was planning and her night time activities and everything would be fine.
She waited for the next raid on her village, and snuck outside as she tended to. This time, rather than help fight them off like she normally did, she hid and waited for them to leave so she could follow them back to their camp. Trying to fight them normally wasn't working; she decided she had to take them down at the source. Once she found it, she continued to hide until they left again then took everything valuable that she could carry and burned it down. The trip took several days, several days she wasn't at home and was considered missing. Hikaru was in a lot of trouble when she got home, but she considered it worth it. There were less raids on the village for a time, but it wasn't enough to stop them. There were always more.
For quite some time after that she was watched closely. She had proven she was willing to go behind peoples' backs to do what she thought was right, so she couldn't be trusted as much as she could be before. She still managed to find some time to train, and of course most activities could be used to improve her combat abilities, but she wasn't allowed to train with the rest of the teens in the village anymore. But it was fine because she knew all she had to do was find the times no one was looking and continue to do what she thought was right.
Then she got sick. It was excruciating, and her father kept telling her that all this was happening because of her recent actions. But that was fine, it was probably still less than the pain the entire village felt when they were attacked. More then the pain though, she felt delirious and it was difficult to make good decisions. The next raid happened while she was sick and was supposed to be sleeping, but once she heard the noises outside she knew she had to do something. That she might not be able to didn't occur to her. She stood up, dizzy and feverish, grabbed her weapons, and went down to the village as she always did. It was difficult to tell up from down, but she managed to get there all the same. In the middle of the fight she suddenly started to glow, radiating an oppressive heat over the battle field. It chased off the raider's horses, and even the humans didn't know what to make of it. Any attempt to attack her directly resulted in severe burns once they got close enough, and the few that pushed closer lost limbs when they tried to touch her. It was too much for her, and Hikaru collapsed in the middle of the battle. Upon waking the next day, she no longer felt sick, but she didn't remember most of the details of the battle.
It didn't take long for her to figure out how to reactivate that fire mode again. That was when she realized she could do far more than she thought before. Limiting herself to saving the village seemed odd now, though it was still a good first step. Hearing about what was going on outside of the village was appalling, and she figured that with this kind of power she could put an end to that as well.
Magic Overview: Hikaru's power is hard to miss. Once she activates it, her body starts glowing and it looks like she's on fire. The fire doesn't look like ordinary flames though. Rather than going upwards, they go outwards, like she's radiating flames. Further, they look like they're under a lot of pressure, and end up looking almost like lava. It's bright enough that looking at her directly is difficult, and the occasional flare only makes that more difficult. She radiates heat while glowing. It's not hot enough to burn or melt most things, but it's certainly hot enough to be oppressive. Beyond that, objects lighter than her seemed compelled to orbit around her, and she seems to be capable of flying and moving at huge speeds. It makes her look like a shooting star.
Tools: She carries around a short sword and a bow with a quiver of arrows. She's known for diving her enemies at high speed to stab them, and her arrows seem unnaturally accurate, sometimes curving in mid flight to hit the target.
