There were a lot of things Diana liked about 2018, but if there was one thing she could look forward to almost every day, it was the food. Those people did weird things to their food that she would have never thought of trying and the results were amazing. Some of them were fried and covered in grease until they were soggy. Some of it was so sugary it made her gag the first couple of times. And then there was that weird tradition of putting food with other food until it was barely recognizable anymore or finding weird ways to put meat with meat and avoid any kind of vegetable or spice. It looked incredibly unappetizing the first few times she saw it, especially the things that were dripping, but once she actually tried it, a lot of those really nasty looking foods were actually really good. Sometimes the texture was terrible, but the flavor was great.
That was one of the two reasons Diana made a point of eating in the cafeteria. The other was the portal in the ceiling. There were all kinds of dragons flying and walking around there and she really wanted to pick a fight with one. They were big, so they were probably strong and dangerous. Even their size aside, their teeth and how they hunted was enough of an indication that there was some serious risk involved. In other words, it sounded fun and exciting, and if she actually won that'd say a lot about what she could do now. Unfortunately, the portal was in the ceiling where she couldn't get to it. Even with her power she couldn't jump high enough, and it was times like this that she cursed not getting something that would let her fly. She could probably con someone into helping her up, or at least find a really big ladder, but that sounded like too much work and she always found something to distract her before going through with it. Plus, asking someone for help seemed to defeat the purpose anyway. If she wanted to see what she could do, then what was the point in trying to get someone to fill in the gaps on what she couldn't do? She needed to find her own solution.
Eventually she would. When she got bored and there weren't a million other cool things to be doing. For now, she settled on always eating in the cafeteria and staring at the ceiling. Given what her power was doing to her metabolism, between the frequent need for healing and her attempts to optimize how much muscle her body can develop, that was quite often; generally five or more times a day depending on how big she decided to make her meals. This time, she made an extra big burger with as many toppings as she could find, including other meats and other toppings people wouldn't normally put on a burger, with a side of fries and a big plate of buffalo wings. She had never seen a buffalo, but she was under the impression they were large animals and she wondered what they would even do with wings so tiny, but they were quite delicious. And she always made them extra spicy. Balancing all that with an extra large orange soda and a glass of milk made it hard to carry, but she managed. Mostly. A few fries spilled, but she wasn't feeling inclined to eat them off the floor or otherwise clean up after herself.
She set her food down on one of the tables directly below the portal, but before she could sit down, she heard a loud screech and then a giant head and set of wings dove out of the portal, dive bombing right towards the mountain of meat she just set down. The winged creature quickly gobbled up all of the food she gathered, knocking over the drinks in the process, and then started swooping back upwards. For a moment, Diana was stunned. She didn't expect something like this to happen and wasn't quite sure how to respond to it. Before it could completely turn around, she grinned. One of those beasts was suddenly with in her reach and there was no way she was going to let it go. This time it was personal. Or so she could claim if anyone happened to walk in on her. Really, she just wanted to fight the dragon.
"Get back here you oversized lizard!" she shouted.
Wasting no time, she amplified her legs' ability to jump so she could get enough height to stab the dragon in the tail with the spear she always kept on her back. Getting through its scales was tough, but nothing she couldn't handle. They weren't as thick on such an unimportant part of its body as they were around its vitals. The dragon roared in pain, loud enough that the tables started shaking. Now she just had to start climbing the thing so she could get to a better vantage point. Diana only took a moment to amplify her sense of balance so that all its thrashing wouldn't be enough to throw her off. Even then, she had to tread carefully, stabbing her spear into its flesh as she climbed just so she'd have something more solid to hold onto.
